Workshops with gold at MaterialMaya studio
Frequently asked questions
I’m interested in making a gold engagement ring / bringing my fiancé to create our wedding bands. Do you offer a workshop for this? What is the price?
I’ve recently started working with gold and am still gaining the experience needed to offer Goldsmith workshops officially. During this period, I’m keeping the price the same as for a silversmithing class - €140 per person for a private session or €280 for a couple.
This price does not include the cost of materials. We can use your scrap gold, or I can prepare the necessary amount of gold for your project.
The price of fine gold fluctuates daily (ranging from €92 to €95 per gram in July 2025 + 23%VAT), and your final expense will depend on the karat you choose for your rings. I’ll be able to calculate the approximate total cost of the workshop once we finalize the design and technique you’d like to use.
Can I use gemstones? What designs and techniques are available for a total beginner?
Yes, you can use gemstones with my guidance and help. But there are some nuances. Since fine jewelry requires a high level of precision and experience, certain designs are not available to make during the workshop - for example, prong, pave or bead settings:
But bezel setting and cast-in-place (for heat resistant stones) are doable:
As well tension setting like here:
Minimalist, rough, and organic designs are more forgiving and better suited for beginners, so I would recommend choosing one of these styles for the ring band:
Wax sculpting/carving and sand casting techniques are available as well, though they may require a larger amount of material.
And of course, if you have your own design idea, let’s discuss it – I’m always up for creative challenges!
What karat and gold tones are available?
We can work with 14k and 18k gold in yellow, rose, or green tones. Let me know your preference, and I’ll help you choose the best option for your design and budget.
I want to recycle my old gold jewelry of different karats and tones, is that OK?
Yes, you can melt gold of different karats together to create a new alloy, but the result will have a non-standard karat value and a unique tone. If that’s fine with you, we can absolutely work with it.
